Care about our future

Nature and all of its beauty both above and below the surface is something that we take for granted.  Taking care of nature and trying to protect what we have should be high on everyones priority list.  There are too many scary examples of what has already happened.  Read the following:

  • Less then 1% of marine habitats are protected
  • 25% of the world´s coral reefs are already dead
  • 100 million sharks are killed each year
  • More then 70% of the world´s marine fisheries are now fished up to or beyond their sustainable limits
  • Nearly 60% of the world´s reefs are at signicant risk of being lost in the next three decades

This is why we at Scuba Travel have decided to put up this page on the website.  All of us have been involved in organizations or groups that have worked to protect our environment and we would like to share this involvement with you. We are going to write updates about projects, research or new information that has come forward that we feel effects each and every one of us, especially us divers.

Shark Trust

Established in 1997, the Shark Trust is the UK registered charity which works to advance the worldwide conservation of sharks through science, education, influence and action. Our vision is a world where sharks thrive within a globally healthy marine ecosystem.

The Trust is an effective and well respected advocate for sound shark management and protection; a founder member of the Shark Alliance; the Secretariat of the European Elasmobranch Association; and a membership organisation which provides a link between the public and the science community.

We work closely with the general public and a wide range of specialist groups including divers, boat owners, politicians and fishermen. The Trust is in favour of sustainably managed fisheries and works with both commercial and recreational fishers and their representative organisations in a bid to secure a future for elasmobranch stocks.

 The Shark Trust:

• Is a well respected authority for sound shark management and protection.
• Delivers innovative and engaging public outreach, awareness and recording schemes.

Save Our Leatherbacks Operation
This non-profit organisation's primary goal is to recognize and help correct the nesting issues on the beaches of Irian Jaya, Indonesia.  Through education of the local population in Iraian Jaya, as well as the rest of the world and expeditions to help the nesting mother turtles and babies get into the sea safely, the organisation, founded by Larry McKenna, has been working hard since 2005.

The largest sea turtle and reptile on earth, Leatherbacks can be over 2 m long, 3 m wide and 1 m thick and can weigh up to 1000 kg.  The leatherback population has been decreasing at an alarming rate and research shows that there are less then 1000 remaining turtles around Indonesia. Click on the following link to read more about the organisation and what you can do to help: www.saveourleatherbacks.org
